Building Structurally Sound Homes With Used Wood and Lumber

While a growing number of builders have begun to use a variety of used building materials, the most commonly reused material is still common wood.  Lumber, when well maintained, can last for hundreds of years without losing its structural integrity.  This is why so many historic homes are still in such excellent shape after many years.  These homes have faced wars, storms, and the wrath of nature without losing shape or structure.  When homes are deconstructed, many homeowners send their lumber to landfills, where it is disposed of rather than reused.  While lumber is biodegradable, the waste of these viable materials necessitates the further deforestation of many areas of forest in order to create new lumber.  By reusing viable lumber, the amount of deforestation can be greatly reduced, and a significant amount of antique hardwood can be spared the fate of the local landfill.

There are a number of economic and environmental reasons to consider the use of used hardwood for building homes, but one of the biggest reasons many homeowners decide to use this wood is that there are a number of rare woods that can only be purchased used.  Many rare and exotic woods are now subject to strict laws that prohibit the deforestation of the trees for lumber purposes.  This means that there is no new supply of these woods, and builders must resort to secondhand sources if they wish for their home to be built using these materials.  This provides a great service to the homeowner, allowing them the materials they desire while also sparing the rare trees and saving the landfill from another supply of wasted lumber.

Wood is an easy building material to find, but secondhand wood offers quality, durability, and cost savings.  This is an excellent reason to purchase secondhand lumber.  Well-maintained secondhand lumber can be used with minimal extra effort, though putties and fillers may be needed to fill in nail holes and fill small cracks if the surface needs to be painted.  Used building equipment and materials are quickly becoming a viable option in the minds of many homeowners, and used wood is by far one of the most commonly reused materials.  Regardless of the construction project, whether it is creating a new home, a deck, or a fence, used wood can be an excellent and inexpensive building material that offers significant benefit to the buyer and to the environment.  Used building materials are quickly gaining popularity, and people involved in all parts of construction can benefit from their use.
